Scleral Lenses

Hydrate, protect, and restore vision.

Scleral lenses are large contact lenses designed to rest on a portion of the sclera (the white of the eye) while creating a dome above the sensitive cornea (the clear window of the eye).

What Do Scleral Lenses treat?

  • Distorted Cornea | Scleral lenses create a smoother optic surface that can correct visual problems caused by irregular corneas.

  • Severe Dry Eye | The space between the scleral lens and the cornea collects fluid, providing comfort to individuals with severe dry eyes.

Advantages of Scleral Lenses

  • More comfortable than traditional lenses.

  • More stable in the eye.

  • Larger and easier to handle.

High Order Aberration Correction

Reduce glare, halos, and blur.

Small irregularities in the cornea can result in subtle refractive errors called higher-order aberrations (HOA). HOAs can cause glare, halos, blurring or double vision.

Scleral Lenses Offer a Solution

  • HOA are too small to correct with conventional contact lenses or glasses.

  • Since scleral lenses do not rotate in the eye, they can be customized to correct this type of error.

Gas Permeable Lenses

Sharp vision with breathable design.

Gas permeable (GP) lenses are small, hard contact lenses that are custom made to rest over the cornea and allow oxygen to reach the eye surface.

Advantage of GP Lenses

  •  Reduce the risk of problems caused by hypoxia (a lack of oxygen) at the cornea.

  • For individuals with misshapen corneas, can provide a better fit and sharper vision.

  • More durable and easier to handle.

Adjustment Period is Required

Due to their rigidity, it may take a few weeks of regular wear before GP lenses feel comfortable all day. This process may need to be repeated if GP lenses are not worn for several days, meaning continuous use is recommended.

Hybrid Lenses

Clarity of hard lenses, comfort of soft.

Hybrid contact lenses combine the rigid center of gas permeable lenses with a soft outer skirt for improved comfort.

Advantage of Hybrid Lenses

  • Maintains the clarity and breathability of GP lenses.

  • Requires a shorter adjustment period.

  • Hybrid lenses do not need to be worm continuously.

What Do GP and Hybrid Lenses Treat?

  •  Nearsightedness/ Farsightedness.

  • Astigmatism (misshapen cornea resulting in blurry vision).

  • Ectasia (thinned cornea resulting in blurry vision).

Cosmetic Contact Lenses

Clarity of hard lenses, comfort of soft.

Cosmetic contact lenses are painted lenses that can alter the appearance of a cloudy or damaged cornea to restore the shape, size, color and/or patterning.

Cosmetic Scleral Lenses

  • For eyes that are still functional (less damage).

  • Can be made with a prescription when necessary.

  • Can block distracting light or reduce visual doubling caused by a damaged cornea.

Cosmetic Soft Contact Lenses

  •  For eyes that are not functional (more damage).

  • Only covers the cornea of the eye.

PROSE Treatment

Custom prosthetic scleral lenses designed to restore vision and comfort

What is PROSE?

PROSE (Prosthetic Replacement of the Ocular Surface Ecosystem) is an advanced medical treatment for patients with complex corneal disease or severe ocular surface disorders. This non-surgical therapy restores vision, relieves eye pain, and improves quality of life using custom-designed scleral lenses.

These transparent, dome-shaped lenses, about the size of a nickel, are made of gas-permeable material that allows oxygen to reach the eye. Each lens vaults over the damaged or irregular cornea, creating a fluid reservoir filled with sterile saline. This continuous hydration protects the eye, promotes healing, and provides all-day comfort.

PROSE lenses are inserted each morning and removed at night. They are uniquely designed for each patient’s eye shape and therapeutic needs, and they fit under the eyelids to protect the surface from blinking friction and environmental irritation

Who Can Benefit from PROSE?

PROSE treatment is intended for individuals with complex ocular surface diseases or corneal irregularities that are not adequately managed by conventional therapies. Conditions that may benefit from PROSE include:

  • Chronic dry eye

  • Keratoconus and corneal ectasia

  • Corneal scarring or trauma

  • Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)

  • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome

  • Sjögren’s Syndrome

  • Post-corneal transplant complications

  • Failed conventional contact lens wear

If you’ve experienced chronic discomfort, distorted vision, or poor outcomes with previous treatments, PROSE may offer meaningful improvement in comfort and vision.

Why Choose Precision Cornea Centre for PROSE?

Precision Cornea Centre is proud to be one of only two centres in Canada offering this highly specialized care. Dr. Yelle is the only certified PROSE provider at our clinic. She has completed a PROSE Fellowship through Boston Sight, a globally recognized leader in this treatment.
